Reflection

Big Picture

I really enjoyed the whole process of this project. When I found the problem I wanted to tackle, I had no idea where to start. It was super fun to research and learn so many new things about Mars. There were some points where I couldn't find any websites with the information I needed so I had to combine all the information I had and problem solve. Overall it was a super fun experience and I learned a ton of new skills.

I came to pick this problem to address after discussing a few options with people around me. After I asked them about Mars, they said that they didn't know anything about Mars and thought it was impossible to live there. When I heard these comments I knew I had to make this my project. I have always wanted to travel to Mars and possibly live there so it was an easy decision to pick this problem. I also chose it in hopes of improving it throughout college and maybe making it a real thing.

The Problem

My Solution

I'm proud of my "completed" project. I intend to keep working on it in the future so it isn't quite done yet. It solved the problem but there are definitely different and better ways to solve it. I to the approach that I did to keep it realistic and similar to common homes now. I started it as a normal house but underground but I didn't like separated they were. I wanted the socialization so I came up with the idea of a underground hotel vibe. My project isn't done and there are things that could be improved like the idea of the Moxie and food.

The Expo went really well and I enjoyed it. It felt super fast and I kind of wished it was longer. The looks of astonishment on people faces when I told them what my project was, was the best part. I was unsure about my project at first and didn't think people would like it or be interested in it. I didn't have script or anything to read off of so my speech varied everytime. If I did the Expo again, I would change the way my table is laid out. It was awkward to squat down and show people the computer screens.

The Expo

Future

The past four years of STEAM really helped me find my interests. I don't think I would've picked engineering as my major if I didn't have all these classes. Senior year was the best year and I really developed a lot of skills. It helped me learn problem solving skills, software skills and getting better at research. These skills will be really helpful in college and even after college.

STEAM Skills

  • Problem solving

    • I had to learn how to problem solve while doing this project. There was a few times there was a dead end and I needed more information. It really helped me with deciding what to do next.

  • Revit

    • I learned how to use revit for this project and it was a lot to learn and remember. Revit is what I used to make the whole building.

  • Researching

    • I had to do a lot of research for this project and had to learn how to do it efficiently. I learned what websites were good and how to keep everything organized.

  • Designing

    • Learning how to design a building was a challenge too. I looked through many floorplans and pictures to see if certain thing were possible or efficient.
